Disease Street Tour workshop

Take an interactive tour through our Victorian slum street with our costumed guide and see for yourself how difficult it was to avoid the hazards and stay healthy in nineteenth-century Leeds.

Drawing from health inspector reports from the period, this session can be adapted to best suit the focus of your classroom learning.

What will my students do in this session?

Students will experience the sights, sounds and smells of Disease Street. With the help of their guide, your group will investigate the lives of people living and working on the street, before eventually discovering their fate.

What will my students learn in this session?

  • Students will be able to describe the living conditions and health hazards experienced in Industrial Britain.
  • Students will draw contrasts between the experience of different social classes in the Victorian period.
  • Students will identify changes across time.
