WW1: Treatments & The Trenches workshop

How did World War 1 shape healthcare and medicine as we know them today? Explore first-hand experiences and new medical innovations from the Western Front in this hands-on workshop.
What will my students do in this session?
Using records, photographs, and objects from East Leeds War Hospital (the building that is now home to the museum) students will hone their source analysis and historical enquiry skills. They will get to grips with conditions in the trenches, as well as the chain of evacuation that leads them all the way back to Leeds. They will visit our Response to Crisis gallery with an expert guide, investigating key medical technologies from the conflict up close. To finish, students will apply their new learning to an exam-style question.
What will my students learn in this session?
Students will recognise life-threatening hazards in the trench environment and identify the medical treatments available.
Students will describe each stage in the chain of evacuation from the Western Front.
