Adventurer, nurse and pioneer – it can only be Mary Seacole. Using smell, sight and sound, you will be transported back to the Caribbean to explore Mary Seacole’s extraordinary life in Jamaica. Don’t relax too much though, she needs your help in the Crimean War’s British Hotel.

What will my students do in this session?

Students begin with a trip to the Apothecary Shop to experience the sounds and smells of Mary’s home country, Jamaica. They will hear the story of her early life, before making the treacherous journey to her British Hotel in the Crimea. There, they will need to get stuck in with Mary’s daily tasks, including bandaging patients, gathering ingredients, and preparing nourishing meals.

What will my students learn in this session?

Students will recount key events from the life of Mary Seacole.
Students will recognise the work Mary Seacole performed in her British Hotel.
Students will explore Mary Seacole’s up brining in Jamaica, and recognise key differences between Jamaica and the UK.
