Community Spaces at Thackray

Community is important here at Thackray, so we have opened a space for you, to be used by you. The Core provides rooms to host events, discussions or simply a safe space to escape.

In the Core there are two rooms that are available for people to use.

Big Core

This space can be used to hold a range of events, workshops, and activities. It is equipped with a tech and kitchenette; we also offer free tea and coffee!

Little Core

Need a space to relax, read a book or play some games, then head to our Little Core – the museum’s living room. You can use the space to social and connect with one another and the museum.

The Core is home to a project that has allowed young people from the community a place to express their identity. The museum’s partnership project with Leeds 2023 and Sable Radio, Culture Club, has been working with young people to explore the museum’s collection and share their stories in new, creative ways. Culture Club runs their weekly youth club, for people aged 16-21 from East Leeds, to focus on exploring healthcare and medical histories through creative media. You can find more on that here.
The space also hosts creative writing workshops, aiming to allow participants to develop skills and express themselves. In collaboration with local poet, author and playwright, Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, we have some new sessions coming up, so be sure to keep an eye open for further details.
