On the Bench

The Exhibition

Free with a museum ticket from the 22nd July

This summer, bring your family to our brand new season of exhibitions and events ‘On the Bench’ – the game-changing story of sport and injury. Our season explores what happens when players get injured and who helps them recover.

Curated in partnerships with Leeds sporting superstars, On the Bench invites you behind the curtain and on to the treatment table to hear their injury stories.

Stevie Ward, ex-captain of Leeds Rhinos, shares his experience of head injuries and how these have shaped a new career outside of sport. He’ll also share the story of his amazing comeback from a shoulder injury and how he went on to play a starring role in the Rhino’s 2017 Super League Grand Final win.

Norman Francis is an ex-basketball player and current coach of the Mandela Warriors in Chapel Town. Norman shares the story of losing his leg and how he’s overcome this setback to continue coaching the next generation of Leeds basketball stars.

The Leeds Roller Derby Club are a women’s flat-track roller derby club. We talk to Catherine Robins and Vicky B who have both broken their legs while playing and hear about how they’ve managed to remain involved in the sport.

Free Activities

Learn how to prevent injury with our fun and interactive warm-up sessions. You’ll have the chance to participate in activities such as hula hooping and cone stretches to discover how this will help your body loosen muscles and stay healthy.

Feeling creative? We’ve got the opportunity to design, build and test your own sports injury treatments. Take on our design challenge to create a colourful collage cast or test your skills at sling-making in our Innovation Station.

Join our team for a series of daily talks and an exploration of the fascinating objects in our collection that explore the stories of injury and recovery.

All these activities and more are free with your museum ticket.
