Home Educator’s Day

Fri, 22 May 2026

The body is an amazing collection of parts that work together to keep us fit and healthy. But how does the body fit together? Does everyone’s body fit together in the same way? What happens when a part of our body stops working?

Find out at Thackray Museum of Medicine’s Home Educator Day.

Exclusive for home-educating families with children of all ages, our day of hands-on activities and science shows will reveal the inner workings of the human body. Expect rib-tickling fun and brain-bending facts from our science Boffins, along with creative crafts and family trails.

The following activities will be included with museum entry:

Thackray Science Live: Funny Bones

11am, 11:40am, 1pm, 1:40pm | All Ages

On a dark, dark street there was a dark, dark museum. And in a dark, dark museum… some Boffins lived!

In a series of 20-minute on-gallery shows, join our in-house gang of experimenters to explore our brilliant bones, magnificent muscles, and remarkable replacement parts.

Craft: Scratch That!

10am–4pm | All Ages

Hip bones, hearts, skulls, stomachs, teeth, and toes. Use our anatomical stencils and scratch art sheets to reveal what’s going on beneath!

Sensory Craft: Mix & Mend

10am–4pm | All Ages

Visit the Apothecary Shop to investigate the curios remedies that were used to heal the body in the past. Crush, twist, smell, and splat our ingredients to mix your own treatments for aching muscles and broken bones.

Family Trail: How We Fit Together

10am–4pm | All Ages

Can you match each body part to its right place? Complete the trail around the galleries and discover how our body parts fit together.

Explorer Bags

10am–4pm | Recommended for Under 5s

Can you find the crochet organs hidden across the museum? Expect to find woolly eyes, brains, tummies and intestines – and use your senses to link them to the objects in your bag!

Hands-on Eye Dissections

10:30am & 2.30pm | Recommended for 7+ | Pre-book your space

Did you know that the eye has approximately 2 million working parts? Learn to name and identify just a few as you get up close to the inner workings of this fascinating body part, as you dissect a real eye* with the help of our expert learning team.

These workshops are exclusive for home-educating families on 22nd May. For the workshop you will receive protective equipment and a dissection kit, including scalpels, scissors, tweezers and a pair of eyes per table. Maximum two people per table, including minimum one adult.

The workshop will last 45 minutes – please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the workshop starting.

Please note that this workshop requires participants to focus on intricate parts of the eye and follow along with a demonstration from a member of staff. If you are at all concerned about the equipment used, or the contents of the workshop, please contact us to discuss suitability.

*Non-human! This workshop uses animal products.
