Summer Holidays: Poo, Glorious Poo

Mon, 28 July 2025 - Sun, 31 August 2025 10am-4pm

What did the Romans use to wipe? Where was the biggest poo fossil ever found? And what can we learn from old poo to stay healthy today?

This summer, we’re celebrating the science of going to the loo with Poo, Glorious Poo. There’ll be games outside the museum, as well as science shows, soap making workshops, talks and backpack trails.

From diet and digestion to disease and dung beetles, explore what happens after you eat and why your toilet habits matter more than you think.

Here’s a flavour of what’s included in your museum ticket:

Thackray Boffins Show: Prehistoric Poo and You

Daily

We’re back with another live history show all about… poo! Travel back in time with the Boffins to dig up the history of poop – from ancient toilets to fossilised faeces. What will they smell next?

Outdoor activity: The Toilet Toss!

Daily

We’ll be playing a very fun (and very messy) game outside the museum!

Using a ball launcher and beanbag, hurl poop into open toilet bowls and see how many logs you can land in the bogs. Go head-to-head with an opponent (or family member) and see who gets the bragging rights.

Soap Workshops with Bobbi Rae

Fridays in August | Drop-in

Join artist, illustrator and designer Bobbi Rae to make your own soaps! Fancy a poo, parasite or peachy bum? Enjoy clean hands and dirty minds in this one-of-a-kind craft activity.

Backpack Trail: What Your Poo Says About You

Daily

Something’s not right in the museum… and the clues are in the loo! Join our backpack trail all about dodgy dumps and strange stools.

Story & Rhyme Time: Who’s in the Loo?

Wednesdays | 10–11am | For under 5s | £5 per child / £4 additional

Our under-fives story sessions will be flushing out facts about the toilet habits of the animal kingdom. Like, did you know that the average elephant poops enough to use 100 sheets of loo roll a day? Or that butterflies can’t poo at all? These sessions will include story-telling, singing, signing and sensory play.

From medicine at sea to poisonous plants, Thackray uses creativity and play to learn about a different medical theme every school holiday.
